How to join in with our meetups
I’m a riichi mahjong player - when can I join you to play?
Currently our Wednesday club nights are our most frequent meetups! See below.
You can also expect all-day meetups every couple of months at weekends, and other one-off events. These will always be posted on this website, or you can see How to chat to us to stay in the loop!
Even if there’s no meetup, you’re always welcome to post in our Discord or Facebook asking for a game somewhere in Bristol - you may well find plenty of players eager to join you!
I’ve only ever played riichi online - can I join?
Many of our first-time attendees have only ever played riichi online - that’s no problem! We can teach you all the extra bits so you can start playing in-person. There’s no need to worry about not knowing how to score, or set up the walls, or know every single rare yaku - your fellow players will gladly help you out!
I’ve never played riichi before! Can you help me learn?
If you have not yet played at all - including if you’ve played other forms of mahjong, but have yet to try riichi - then welcome to the start of your journey!
As a first step, we would ask that you take some time to explore some of the great online resources which can show you the ropes and get you up to speed. We have a guide to these resources which you can read here. We would ask that you do this before attending any club meetups to play games - sorry!
You are, however, very welcome to come and watch a game at one of our meetups, to get a feel for things! Just drop us a line to let us know.
Also, if you can find four people who want to learn in-person completely from scratch, but would like a guiding hand to take them through the rules and their first games, do drop us an email, as we may be able to help!
Wednesday club nights
When: Every Wednesday evening
Time: 18:15-21:45
Where: Watershed Cinema Café Bar (1 Canons Road, Bristol, BS1 5TX)
Played in an EMA-style tournament format with timed hanchan and random table draws, these nights are still mainly about having fun with friends. The playing atmosphere is encouraged to be ‘casually competitive’.
Important! Pre-registration is required and signups are accepted in batches of 4. To pre-register, post in the #bristol-chat channel of the JanKenRon Discord server. Instructions for how to reach this are on our “How to chat to us” page.
Attendees are requested to stay for the full duration of the evening, allowing two hanchan to be played each club night.
No attendance fee - but please support the venue by purchasing food and drink!
